Shire Gaucher treatment fast tracked
Shire pharmaceuticals has received fast track designation from the FDA for its treatment for type I Gaucher disease — a severe inherited degenerative disease that most commonly affects Ashkenazi Jews.
Although the population of Gaucher sufferers is quite small, there is money to be made as the extremely high cost of current treatments of hundreds of thousands of dollars an year, together with the painful and dangerous danger of the disease, means that an effective drug could be sold at a high price.
Unlike smaller companies that have previously worked on Gaucher treatments, Shire is too big for a Gaucher drug to be of dramatic importance, but the high value per patient means that it is worth keeping an eye on — and the same is true for other diseases that are not widespread but not severe.
