Cable and Wireless demerger rumoured

The latest in a series of press reports of a Cable and Wireless demerger comes from the FT which reports that the demerger will be announced on Thursday, with the H1 results.

The FT, and some other reports, is slightly misleading in how it describes the demerger, as splitting the UK and international businesses. Unless the company is planning an unlikely radical reorganisation, it is likely to split into its two existing divisions:

  1. CWI which consists of the Caribbean incumbent telco businesses and similar businesses in other small markets (Monaco, Macau and Panama), and,
  2. Worldwide which consists of the UK business and wholesale and business telecoms in the US, Europe and Asia.

The company has not seen fit to comment on rumours that have now been in the media for a week, despite the fact that they are clearly material to the price. Hopefully, we will know for certain on Thursday.
