St James's Place statement: not as good as it looks

St James’s Place announced that it has returned to growth in the third quarter. Total new business on an APE basis only rose 3%, but it is an improvement on the declines in the first half.
The 17% increase in funds under management is the result of the recovery in equities markets, with only £600m of the £3.4bn increase coming from an inflow of funds.
There appears to be a wide disparity in the performance of different products. The company points our high performing areas, but this implies that there have been declines elsewhere to lead to the low overall growth.
